Red Gold. Strawberries, tomatoes, harassment and exploitation in the Mediterranean is an investigative fieldwork documentary exposing exploitation, harassment and psychological torture suffered by women in the Mediterranean Sea region.
There were more than 130 interviews conducted with female workers, unionists, and members of different associations for this investigation. The book examines living and working conditions in Italy, Spain, and Morocco, which are the most important exporters of fruits and vegetables. Besides women’s salaries, other factors contributing to injustice and unequal treatment between men and women include exhausting shifts, extortion, blackmail, physical and psychological violence, and sexual abuse.
Female workers’ voices emerge through these pages along with their daily survival stories, their resistance, and attempts to denounce crimes they suffered.
In April 2018, Settenove published the book Red Gold. Strawberries, tomatoes, harassment and exploitation in the Mediterranean. The book has been reprinted three times and presented over 90 times in Italy, Belgium, Luxemburg, and Bulgaria.
